2024-08-23

On the morning of October 29th, we had the privilege of inviting Professor Zhai Dongsheng, Vice Dean of the School of International Relations at Renmin University of China and Director of the Regional and Country Studies Institute, to deliver a thematic presentation titled “Great Power Rivalries, Middle East Shifts, and the World Economy” to Fujian business leaders. This forum garnered significant attention and was attended by over 300 alumni and elite business professionals.

Forum Background

The Fujian Business Wealth Economic Forum is part of the Huaqiao University Corporate Innovation Executive Training Program.

Every year, we regularly invite authoritative experts from various industries to Quanzhou to share cutting-edge business insights, helping alumni and regional entrepreneurs broaden their perspectives and stimulate new ideas. This initiative is crucial for enhancing the operational capabilities and service standards of Fujian businesses.

Keynote Speaker

Professor Zhai Dongsheng
Vice Dean of the School of International Relations, Renmin University of China
Director of the Regional and Country Studies Institute, Renmin University of China
Vice President of the Emerging Economies Research Association

Highlights

  1. The Triangular Relationship of China, the U.S., and Russia: Past, Present, and Future

The forum began with Professor Zhai using the story of the “Murphy’s Law” gunman game to vividly illustrate the current triangular relationship between China, the U.S., and Russia. He provided an in-depth analysis and interpretation of the strategic logic and evolution of their interactions. Professor Zhai believes that the future of U.S.-China relations will largely revert to a parallel relationship.

  2. Middle East Shifts: The Contest Among Mediators Amidst Reconciliation

Professor Zhai discussed China’s diplomatic practice in the Middle East, noting that China's rise has provided a geopolitical buffer for Middle Eastern countries and set an example in their development paths. He highlighted that the Middle East is moving away from U.S. control, transitioning from complementarity to competition, with increasing economic interdependence with China.

  3. World Economy: The End of the Dollar Interest Rate Cycle and Its Implications

From a professional perspective, Professor Zhai examined the end of the dollar interest rate cycle, using charts and data to explain the trends in the dollar index, precious metals, and energy. His insights prompted considerable reflection and new thinking on financial management and business investment.

  4. China’s Economy: How to Make the Most of a Good Hand?

Professor Zhai analyzed China’s economic debt, monetary policy, real estate bubble, and welfare system based on research reports. He noted a mismatch between China's industrial progress and macroeconomic conditions. China is currently on the edge of deflation, which poses significant challenges, including reduced consumer spending and investment. Professor Zhai anticipates that global economic conditions will improve as the U.S. monetary policy enters a new easing cycle by the end of next year, and with China’s central fiscal expansion, Chinese entrepreneurs will face better development opportunities.

Appreciation for Empowerment

This forum, where Professor Zhai elaborated on the triangular relationship of China, the U.S., and Russia, Middle East shifts, the dollar interest rate cycle, and China’s economic development, provided profound insights into international political and economic trends.

Professor Zhai’s detailed and professional explanations allowed Fujian business leaders to gain a deeper understanding of the new international political and economic landscape, sparking resonance and reflection among attendees.
